Bell Woods Project 2

This past Spring, I was hired as an Artist in Residence at Hubbard Woods Elementary School in Winnetka, IL. I worked with the Kindergarten teachers to come up with an art integration project that would enrich the classes' study of Bell Woods Park.  This project would result in the installation of five collaborative totem sculptures that would be permanently installed in a natural area of the school's playground.   Each student would be responsible for designing and completing one section of the totem. The student's research for this project included a trip to the nature reserve where they were instructed to observe, listen, sketch, discover, question and explore all that they could about their surroundings. Each student then answered questions, and came up with one image that represented their experience or research. I rolled out and cut a  6" x 12" slab of clay for each student. With their hand drawn image in front of them, the student drew that image onto the clay slab using a sgraffito technique. I then rolled the clay slabs into cylinder, stamped each student's name on his piece,  and fired them before returning to the school to have each student glaze his/her section. I chose five of the student images and sculpted them in clay to create the top of the totems. The sculptures were unveiled to the student's and their families in a celebration at the end of the year picnic. This project was an amazing lesson in collaboration and being a part of something greater than themselves. The students became researchers, designers, sculptors, problem solvers and left Kindergarten feeling like an artist.
